Preserving fresh herbs in the fridge
Did you know that you can preserve fresh herbs in the fridge 2-3 weeks if you wrap them in a wet piece of kitchen paper towel?
It’s true!! I have done it many times by now and it surprises me every time how long they stay fresh.
I just love to use fresh herbs in my food and in the spring and summer, I try to grow my own favourite ones in the garden. In the winter I mostly by a small plant to keep in my kitchen window, but sometimes I also buy a little bunch, which is already cut of the plant. Most of the time I do not have to use it all for one dish and find it’s a pity to throw it away. So I have experience that you can actually store it for quite a long time in the fridge if you preserve it the right way.
- All you have to do is wash the herbs carefully (do not cut the leaves off), and then roll them lightly into a dry piece of kitchen paper towel.
- Now you wet the towel by sprinkling water on to it. You do not want it to soak in water, but it has to be wet all around.
- At last, you put the herbs in a little plastic bag, close it lightly with some air into it, and then store it in the fridge. Make sure not to put anything on top of the bag in the fridge, then it goes wrong!
